No fewer than 19 pregnant young women were rescued yesterday from a baby factory located at Umunkpeyi in Isiala Ngwa South local government area of Abia state, during a raid by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Also rescued were three babies aged 2, while four social workers and four young men were arrested at the premises.
Parading the rescued girls and some of the workers in the baby factory, Abia state commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Andy Dateer, said the raid was carried out following a tip-off, Punch reports.
He explained that young women with unwanted pregnancies were kept in the home by the operators who sell off the babies once they are delivered.
According to him, the owner of the baby factory, who is still at large, also made arrangement with some men who sleep with girls and get them pregnant. When the babies are delivered, the girls are paid peanuts.
