Facebook to ‘launch’ smartphone next year

Facebook to ‘launch’ smartphone next year

Social networking giant, Facebook is to launch its own smartphone by next year, reports have suggested.
New York Times cited unnamed sources, including Facebook employees, suggesting that the network had been hiring several smartphone engineers to build its own brand of mobile phone.
The social media company. recently admitted it needed to diverse its source of income, as it is struggling to make money out of its growing mobile audience.
The company, which recently floated on the stock market, has also just launched its own mobile app store.
The App Center currently offers links to Facebook-enabled apps within Apple’s iOS and Google Android stores but developers will soon be able to write apps to be placed exclusively in Facebook’s store.
According to the New York Times, Facebook has hired experts who worked on the iPhone and other smartphones.
It quoted a Facebook employee as saying the site’s founder Mark Zuckerberg was “worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future… Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms”.
Mobile money
A Facebook smartphone has reportedly been in the works for some time.
In 2010, Techcrunch reported that Facebook was “secretly” building a smartphone – although this particular project is said to have broken down.
The company’s desire to enter the smartphone market could be a result of increasing pressure to improve the potential of mobile to make money.
In a statement for potential investors ahead of its initial public offering earlier this month, the company admitted it had concerns about more users accessing Facebook through their mobile – a trend which could make it more difficult to sell advertising.
When asked by the BBC, a spokeswoman for Facebook said the company did not comment on speculation, and referred instead to a written statement.
“Our mobile strategy is simple: we think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social,” the statement read.
“We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”

Men gossip more than women — Study

The myth that women gossip more than men has been disapproved as studies have shown that men of “nowadays” gossip more than women.
“It is commonly believed that women are the ones who love to spread rumours, and gossip about their friends behind their backs…but today, men…are worse! Men…love a bit of scandal, and will do anything they can to be centre of attention with their colleagues and peers.”
A new study carried out recently by psychology lecturers at the Western Canadian Undergraduate University, Canada, claims that although men and women love to gossip, chatter tends to bring guys closer, and tear female friends apart.
The study found that men chat about shared activities such as sports, which automatically brings them closer while women chat about physical appearance – which can endanger friendships.
Yet another study recently conducted by global research company, Onepoll, revealed that men spend an average of 76 minutes a day chatting and gossiping with their friends or work colleagues, compared to just 52 minutes for women.
The study also found that the favourite gossip topics for men include the antics of drunken friends, old school friends, rumours about possible relationships in the office or the boss, promotions, sex, salaries and the most attractive girl at work…while women were found to be more likely to complain about other women, other people’s sex lives amongst others.
The study further found that office is the preferred place for men to exchange gossip and that guys are happiest when chatting with work colleagues, and 58 per cent admit that being a gossip makes them feel “part of the gang”.
The researchers add that women also love to talk about news but rather than focusing on politics or government issues, news about soap operas and celebrities are more likely to cause a debate. And any type of relationship is up for discussion – whether it is their own, their friends, their friends’ friends or their bond with their mother-in-law.

3 Health Risks that Aren’t Worth Taking

3 Health Risks that Aren’t Worth Taking

Research has shown that some common household items and ordinary activities could be doing you harm.
1. Holding your cell phone up to your ear. Scientists say people who have spent the past decade or more frequently talking on their cell phones in the traditional way are more likely to develop brain tumors. Also, texting or talking while driving, also boosts your chances of having a car wreck
2. Microwaving in plastic. Heat releases some of the chemical building blocks in plastic, sending them into whatever food or drink you’re warming up. One such chemical, bisphenol A (BPA), “can mimic the effects of estrogen in the body, potentially leading to issues like premature puberty and breast or testicular cancer,” so it’s best to avoid microwaving in any plastic container. So it is best to heat food or drink in glass or ceramic.
3. Certain antibacterial soaps and toothpastes.
Triclosan is a germ killer found in a lot of antibacterial hand soaps, body washes, and even some brand-name cavity-control toothpastes. But the American Medical Association recommends against the use of triclosan in our homes, because it may encourage the development of scary bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. “Studies have shown that these triclosan products don’t work any better than regular cleansers or toothpastes, but they damage the environment and potentially place our long-term health at risk,” says Susan Shaw, Ph.D., an environmental scientist at the State University of New York, Albany. Not sure whether triclosan lurks in your favorite products? Just check the labels.

Male contraceptive gene found

Scientists are on the verge of being able to develop a new male contraceptive pill as researchers in University of Edinburgh identified a gene critical for the production of healthy sperm.
Experiments in mice found that the gene, Katnal1, was vital for the final stages of making sperm.
The authors of a study in PLos Genetics said a drug which interrupts Katnal1 could be a reversible contraceptive.
A fertility expert said there was “certainly a need” for such a drug.
Contraception in men is largely down to condoms or a vasectomy.
Researchers at the Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh were investigating the causes of male infertility.
They randomly altered the genetic code of mice to see which became infertile. They then traced the mutations which led to infertility, which led them to Katnal1.
It contains the blueprints for a protein which is important in cells which support the development of sperm. Without the protein, sperm do not fully form and the body disposes of them.
Scientists hope they will be able to perform a similar trick in humans to stop sperm developing, without causing lasting damage.
One of the researchers Dr Lee Smith said: “If we can find a way to target this gene in the testes, we could potentially develop a non-hormonal contraceptive.
“The important thing is that the effects of such a drug would be reversible because Katnal1 only affects sperm cells in the later stages of development, so it would not hinder the early stages of sperm production and the overall ability to produce sperm.
He said it would be “relatively difficult” to do as the protein lives inside cells, however, he said there was “potential” to find something else that protein worked with, which might be an easier target.
‘Holy Grail’
Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield, said there was “certainly a need” for a non-hormonal contraceptive for men and that this had been a “Holy Grail” of research for many years.
He added: “The key in developing a non-hormonal contraceptive for men is that the molecular target needs to be very specific for either sperm or other cells in the testicle which are involved in sperm production.
“If they are not, then such a contraceptive could have unwanted side effects on other cells and tissues in the body and may even be dangerous.
“The gene described by the research group in Edinburgh sounds like an exciting new possible target for a new male contraceptive, but it may also shed light on why some men and sub-fertile and why their sperm does not work properly.”

Samsung Galaxy S3 beats iPhone 4S as most pre-ordered gadget in history

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has already received nine million pre-orders before launch – even with few people getting to play on Android’s latest smartphone until it arrives in the UK on May 29. In the history of gadgets, none has picked up such an army of fans before launch.
It is estimated that when the phone hits the market, it will instantly become the fastest selling gadget in history, beating out the iPhone 4S’s four million units sold in three days.
It also tops the first iPad’s two million tablets in two months, and the Microsoft Kinect system – which allows you to wave at your television via the Xbox 360 games console – which shifted 2.5 million units in 25 days.
Samsung has reportedly hired 75,000 workers to keep up with the demand, with the company confident of meeting all pre-orders.
The company is said to have the capacity to churn out five million phones per month – or 66 phones per worker per month.
Most of the orders will have come through network carriers across the world, based on customer pre-orders, upgrades and anticipated demand.
The carriers will have pre-allocated the majority of this stock to customers, with a surplus to act as a ‘buffer’ in case demand exceeds their supply.
In the UK, Carphone Warehouse has confirmed that the S3 is the most popular phone of the year so far, with thousands of customers lined up to pick up their phone a week from today.
Spokesman Graham Stapleton said: ‘Pre-order demand for the new Galaxy S3 has surpassed expectations since the handset was first unveiled two weeks ago.
‘The first 24 hours alone saw thousands placing their pre-order at Carphone Warehouse.’
The S3′s predecessor – the Galaxy S2 – took about six months to sell 10million phones, and 11 months to sell 20million.
Android’s takeover
The release of the phone is likely to swell the number of Android users – although with the plethora of devices on the operating system, the increase may end up just causing a small spike.
There are now in the region of 350million Android users in the world – with an estimated 900,000 to one million people picking up a new Android device each day.
The software could be on one billion screens by the end of 2013, according to some estimates.
Apple have not released recent figures for iOS usage – both iPhones and iPads – but in early 2011 the total was believed to be about 110million.
Microsoft is notoriously quiet on the number of sales of Windows Phone 7, but it is believed to have shipped about 10 million phones since the operating system launched two years ago, giving them just a fraction – 1.3 per cent – of the market.
Although, to be fair to Microsoft, they might not even need a phone version of Windows – due to patent and licensing agreements, Microsoft makes between $5 and $15 on most sales of Android phones, compared to the estimated $3 which goes into Google’s pockets per handset through advertising revenue each year.
However Nokia is relying on Windows Phone 7, having invested heavily in the operating system as it begins to phase out the ‘Symbian’ OS which has powered much of the manufacturer’s range of phones.
Apple and Samsung between them account for 49.3 per cent of all smartphone sales worldwide – an increase on the 29 per cent the two had in early 2011.
The S3 is Samsung’s latest flagship phone. Despite the record pre-orders it will face substantial competition from HTC’s One series of phones, and the always strong-selling iPhone range.
The Samsung’s most innovative feature is built-in face-tracking and voice control – allowing, Samsung claims, for a more ‘natural’ control system.
It will also pay tribute to Samsung’s expertise in screens, with a large 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen running a resolution of 1280 x 720p – far bigger than Apple’s iPhone, and close in size to the smaller end of the tablet market.
Other innovations include what Samsung claims is a ‘more intelligent’ lock system, that keeps the screen ‘awake’ when the phone’s camera senses eyes watching it, rather than turning it off.
The next iPhone is not due before the Autumn, traditionally launching around October. It is rumoured to come with a four-inch screen, and may be joined by a new addition to the iRange – an iPad Mini.

Scene of the accident yesterday

According to an eyewitness account, the accident occurred when a Lagos bound trailer with number plate, Kebbi, XB370ZUR rammed into some of the petrol tankers haphazardly parked on the two sides of the expressway.

The witness further stated that immediately after the collision, the tankers went up in flames, burning both the heavy trucks parked along the road and some motor boys caught unaware. The accident caused heavy traffic jam along the every busy road, forcing many motorists and passengers to divert their routes. It was a hectic day for officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, (TRACE) as well as the Police controlling traffic. An official of the FRSC who spoke with Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, lamented the accident, recalling that there had been frantic efforts by the Commission to dissuade truck drivers from parking haphazardly on the expressway.

“It is a sad event, but we have tried to no avail to dissadude drivers from parking along the road, because of accident like this,” he lamented. Reacting to the accident yesterday, the concessionaire of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, noted that it had always complained that trailers parking on the roadside are hazardous.

The concessionaire said it had created eight temporary trailer parks along the expressway to take heavy trucks off the road shoulders, but drivers still park carelessly along the road.  “You will recollect that the concessionaire has offered to build permanent trailer parks on the road, which could have solved the problem, but the move did not receive the support of the Ogun State government through the acquisition of land.

“You will also recollect that at the swearing-in ceremony of Ibikunle Amosun as the governor of Ogun State he promised to build some parks within 90 days and actually took possession, although unlawfully, of Bi-Courtney’s land, meant for the asphalt plant, ostensibly to build a trailer park.” The signposts of the trailer park are to be found at the location but nothing more seems to have happened.

KPMG indicts NNPC over $65 million

KPMG indicts NNPC over $65 million demurrage

An official of KPMG, an audit firm, has revealed that the inefficiency of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) in the payment of demurrage on imported fuel at the ports has cost the country $65 million.
The official of the audit firm, Mr Dimeji Salaudin disclosed this when he appeared before the Senate Committee investigating the management of fuel subsidy in the country.
Mr Salaudin also told the committee that the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) overpaid oil marketers a whopping N25 billion in subsidy.
The Senate committee had summoned KPMG on Thursday over its failure to tender vital documents relating to the fuel subsidy scheme.
Not wanting to incur the wrath of lawmakers, two officials of audit firm KPMG appeared before the senate committee investigating the management of the fuel subsidy scheme.
The Minister of Finance had commissioned the international auditing firm in 2010 to review the subsidy regime from January 2007 to June 2010.
Giving details of the report, the KPMG representative said they discovered from their investigations that documents from the PPPRA to pay oil marketers were doctored.
The KPMG official also faulted the governance framework of PPPRA describing it as weak.
The committee directed the Minister of Finance to appear before it on Tuesday 5th June and also subpoenaed the CEOs of Oando PLC and Folawiyo Petroleum Company Limited to appear before it also on Tuesday.

10-Year Old: ‘I Cannot Do Without Sex Daily

Confession Of A 10-Year Old: ‘I Cannot Do Without Sex Daily’  print

A 10-year old girl who was a victim of sexual abuse has made a shocking confession, saying that she cannot do without having sex with men daily.
She narrated how an old man, who was their neighbour at Mile 12, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, lured her into sex at seven and since then she cannot resist having sex everyday.
The primary two pupil said if she did not see any man to have sex with her in her area, she would go to a popular under bridge at Mile 12 Lagos and beg for sex from touts.
She said she came from Enugu state to Lagos to live with her aunt after the death of her father.
Her case has become so serious that she had to be referred to an NGO, Community Health Support and Empowerment Initiative, COHSAEI, which has taken up the challenge to rehabilitate her.
The little girl said she was lured into sex by a man she called Baba who lived with her aunt in the same compound.
She said the man (Baba) usually called her to his apartment whenever his wife and her aunt were not around and will put his finger inside her private part.
“He will tell me to come back home immediately our school closes and when I reach home he will be waiting for me to finger my vagina,” she narrated.
She said with time he started having real sex with her.
She said when the man that initiated her into it moved out of their area, she resorted to meeting other men in the area without her aunt knowing.
She said she has become addicted to sex and cannot do without it.
“When I desire sex and I do not see anybody to do it in my area, I will go under the bridge and beg the touts to do it for me,” he said.
Her predicament came when she confessed to her teacher what she was going through after the teacher noticed some abnormal behaviour in her.
The teacher contacted her aunt who contacted an NGO for assistance.
The programme coordinator of the NGO, Mrs. Priscilla Ingbia, noted that her case was very pathetic because of her age. She said her group took up the challenge to rehabilitate her because it was clear if nothing was done urgently her future was in danger.
She said her organisation has started the process of rehabilitating her by carrying out series of tests on her to ascertain her health conditions.
Ingbia stressed the urgent need to relocate her from her present environment and start a new life for her.
She said her organisation has not been able to do so because of the financial cost of doing so.

students of University of Lagos (UNILAG)disrupted traffic on the 3rd Mainland bridge, Lagos

UNILAG students block Third Mainland Bridge to protest change of institution’s name to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos

The students of University of Lagos (UNILAG), in continuation of their protest over the renaming of their institution after Late M.K.O Abiola, disrupted traffic on the 3rd Mainland bridge, Lagos.

A pregnant woman and many workers on their way to work in Lagos Island were seen stranded on the bridge with the protesting students blocking some sections of the road with seized BRT buses.
The students marched from their main campus at Akoka, Yaba through Herbert Macaulay Street to the Adekunle link on the bridge, demanding the reversion to the original name of the university.
The students are also occupying areas in Alagomeji, Yaba, Sabo and the University’s main gate. Few lecturers and Alumni of the school joined the students in the protest.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, who led a team of police officers to the scene of the protest, asked the students to return to their campuses and stay calm until the government finds a solution to the problem.
President Goodluck Jonathan in his 50-minute Democracy Day address to Nigerians on Tuesday had changed the name of the institution to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.
His announcement of the name change did not go down well with the students, who insisted that Mr Jonathan should have named another national monument after the late Abiola.
Although they said they had nothing against Abiola, who died on July 7, 1998 while fighting to validate his June 12, 1993 presidential mandate, they said UNILAG was not the most appropriate institution to be named after the late politician.
Meanwhile, the University board through its radio station said on Wednesday that it has suspended all its academic activities for the next two weeks. The board also asked all students to vacate the school premises before 11am.

The Minister called on Nigerians not to allow the protest by some students to overshadow the significance of the president’s decision to immortalize  Abiola.
Students of the University of Lagos have taking to the streets for two days consecutively after the pronouncement to protest the name change of the 50 year old institution.

School Senates shut down UNILAG

The Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday announced the suspension of all academic activities in the institution.

The Senate further issued an ultimatum to all students to vacate the University’s premises by 11am and instructed the school security to arrest any student seeing in the premises after the deadline.
The decision of the school authority to shut down the university for two weeks may not be unconnected to the protest by students over the change of name of the institution to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.

Sony Xperia Go rugged smart phone battles water and dust

Sony Xperia Go rugged smart phone battles water and dust

Sony's crafted a brand-new Android smart phone capable of surviving an accidental dive into your pint. The Xperia Go is a 3.5-inch, dust-fighting rugged phone that Sony reckons is ideal for outdoorsy types.
Whether you're scaling Everest or drunkenly stumbling into a lamppost while texting, the Xperia Go has been built to resist life's untoward elements. You get a scratch-resistant screen, and what Sony calls the "highest water and dust resistance of any smart phone".
That means that like the Motorola Defy, the 9.8mm-thick Xperia Go should avoid shattering into a million pieces if you so much as look at it the wrong way. Its resistance rating is IP67, which means it offers total dust ingress protection, and is okay with water immersion between 15cm and 1m depth.
The rough-and-ready build is the selling point here, as apart from doubling as a dog's chew-toy, the specifications on offer are rather modest. The 3.5-inch display has a resolution of just 320x480 pixels, meaning it won't be the best phone out there for web browsing, while the camera boasts a strictly ordinary 5-megapixel resolution.
The Xperia Go is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, which isn't particularly snappy in these quad-core times, while the Go will launch running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sony swears it's 'upgradeable' to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but that's no guarantee that an update will be incoming any time soon.
There's no word yet on when the Xperia Go will actually be released, but it's confirmed to be flaunting a range of colours, coming in black, white or yellow. As far as pricing goes, nothing has been confirmed, but with modest specs, I wouldn't expect this mid-range mobile to break the bank.
Sony has also unveiled a higher-spec water-fighting smart phone, the Sony Xperia Acro S. But Sony tells me that particular phone won't be coming out in the UK.
Would you like a sturdier smart phone? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook wall, then relax with this daft promo video for the Xperia Go, which sees young professional types being clumsy with the phone while cooking a healthy meal.
