Nigerian Gets Global Recognition For Painting With Pencil

On first glance, these stripped-back images of well-known figures look like beautifully shot photographs.

Kelvin Okafor with his magic pencil which he describes as 'a humble instrument'.
In fact, each one is an incredibly detailed pencil drawing.

Their astonishing realism is rapidly making their young artist as famous as his subjects – who include Beyonce, Amy Winehouse, Princess Diana and Mother Teresa.
Kelvin Okafor, 27, graduated from Middlesex University in fine art and is now making waves across the country.
His subjects include popular music artists Tinie Tempah, James Morrison and Adele.
He has also picked out tragic figures from actor Heath Ledger to the late King of Jordan, King Hussein – and with each, he tries to evoke an emotion in the viewer.
Finally, he has used friends and colleagues for the impressively accurate images, which look like soft focus digital photos.
Last year, the artist from Tottenham, north London, exhibited at numerous major art galleries and won a clutch of prestigious national awards for his remarkable work.

Windows to the soul: Kelvin Okafor begins with the eyes when he creates his realistic sketches of famous faces such as Mother Teresa .

Each of his pieces takes around 80-100 hours to complete, over approximately three weeks in the studio.
Mr Okafor creates each piece only in black and white – using graphite pencils, charcoal, black coloured pencil and sometimes grey pastels.
Yet he believes that the range of tone, shade and texture is almost endless.
He draws on a combination of life and photographs, working on his art for up to 15 hours a day.

Okafor's painting of Late Princess Diana

He admits he is ‘passionate about precision’.
‘I aspire to create art as vivid as eyes could see,’ the artist writes on his blog.
‘I want my drawings to prompt an emotional response, making viewers feel as though they are looking at a real live subject.
Mr Okafor describes the pencil as ‘a humble instrument’, but says this is part of its appeal.
‘I’ve always been creative, but fell in love with using pencils in particular.
‘It amazed me, that with only one shade of lead, you can create so many tones and textures, and almost create the illusion of colour.
‘It was only when my images started to create a buzz with other Middlesex University students that I realised their impact.’
He was selected as one of the top two pieces of work at Cork Street Gallery’s Winter Show in 2012 and recently won the Catherine Petitgas Visitors’ Choice Prize, part of the National Open Art Competition.
His work is currently on display at the The Watercolours + Works on Paper Fair at the London Science Museum, until February 3.
Before starting a piece, Mr Okafor spends a few days analysing a photo, concentrating first on the subject’s eyes, which are central to his works’ impact.

Heath Ledger

His pieces are now selling for on average £8,000-£10,000, depending on the scale.
‘The attention I’m receiving is surreal and hasn’t really sunk in yet,’ he added.
‘I’m usually sheltered from it in my studio as I continue to build my portfolio, but I’m really humbled and honoured that so many people appreciate my work.
I hope to have my own gallery in the future.’
He has now had more than 50 commissions, and the dedicated artist cites his role models as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo – because they not only mastered the arts but branched out into other fields including engineering, poetry, science and maths.
Twitter users describe his work as ‘incredible’, ‘extraordinary’ and ‘astounding’.
The talented artist is gaining a large following and has made videos showing the evolution of his work, to illustrate just how each one is created.
Even so, the extent of his skill is truly breath taking.

About Chickenpox (varicella)

Reviewed by Dr Jeni Worden, GP

What is chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a very contagious viral infection that usually runs its course without any problems in childhood.
Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness that's common in children. It causes an itching skin rash with blisters.
The disease is caused by the varicella-zoster virus and usually runs its course without problems.

How do you catch chickenpox?

The viral infection is transferred from one person to another through direct contact with the broken chickenpox blisters and through airborne droplets.
The infectious period lasts from about three days before the rash appears until all the blisters have formed scabs.
The incubation period between being infected with chickenpox until the disease breaks out and symptoms appear is 10 to 20 days.

What are the symptoms of chickenpox?

  • A rash that usually begins on the body and face and later often spreads to the scalp and limbs.
  • It may also spread to the mucous membranes, especially in the mouth and on the genitals.
  • The rash is often itchy.
  • It begins as small red spots, which develop into blisters in a couple of hours.
  • After one or two days, the blisters turn into scabs.
  • New blisters may appear after three to six days.
  • The number of blisters differs greatly from one person to another.
  • The infected person may run a temperature.
  • These symptoms are mild in young children.
  • Chickenpox lasts 7 to 10 days in children and longer in adults.
  • Adults can feel very ill and take longer to recover. They are also more likely than children to suffer complications.

Who is at risk of complications?

Those in the at-risk group who are exposed to the varicella-zoster virus can be given an injection of varicella-zoster-immunoglobin to boost their immunity.
Vaccination against chickenpox is also available.

How does the doctor make a diagnosis?

The diagnosis is made by observing the symptoms and the typical appearance of the rash.

How is chickenpox treated?

  • The treatment mostly consists of easing the symptoms.
  • Remember that an infected person will be contagious until new blisters have stopped appearing and until all the blisters have scabs. They should stay at home while they are infectious.
  • Avoid scratching the blisters because of the risk of infection.
  • Cut the nails short or make the patient wear gloves.
  • Pay attention to personal hygiene.
  • If your child is in pain or has a fever you can give them a mild painkiller, such as paracetamol (eg Calpol) or ibuprofen (eg Nurofen for children). Follow the dosage instructions provided in the leaflet.
  • Calamine lotion can help to relieve the itching.
  • Keep the patient in cold surroundings because heat and sweat may make the itching worse.
  • In attacks of chickenpox where the itching is so serious that the child's sleep is totally disturbed, antihistamine medicines with a heavily sedative effect can be used. Antihistamines are medicines for allergic reactions, motion sickness or insomnia.
  • In serious cases of chickenpox in people with a weak immune system, aciclovir (eg Zovirax tablets/suspension), which works specifically against chickenpox, can be used.

Which complications might arise?

  • Bacteria may infect the blisters.
  • Occasionally scars may remain at the site of the blisters.
  • Conjunctivitis.
  • Pneumonia.
  • In very rare cases, chickenpox can result in complications, such as meningitisencephalitis, inflammation of the heart (myocarditis) or Reye's syndrome.

Future prospects

Once a person has had chickenpox, they will have immunity to the disease for the rest of their life. However, the virus may return later in life as shingles.
A person who has active shingles can infect others with chickenpox, but cannot give shingles to someone else.

BLASPHEMY!!! MALLAM EL-RUFAI ATTACKS JESUS CHRIST ON TWITTER.

**Jesus was having sex with Mary Magdalene. - Mallam El-Rufai.

Former FCT minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has come under heavy attack on Twitter and other social media for his tweet today.
In his attempt to defend former Education minister, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili and deride the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration made reference to Jesus Christ having sex with Mary Magdalene.
The ex minister who posted the tweet yesterday, January 27, 2013, tried to make a joke about Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene in a sarcasm aimed at Information minister, Labaran Maku, Dr Doyin Okupe and Dr Ruben Abati.

This is the Elrufai’s Tweet that is causing a firestorm and condemnation from the Christian community
“@zebbook: If Jesus criticizes Jonathan's govt, Maku/Abati/Okupe will say he slept with Mary Madgalene.”....LWKMD..
Nasir El-Rufai @elrufai
"@Easyaffection: @elrufai Sir with all due respect. I get u point in dis joke. But why Jesus? It's not funny."....ask @zebbook....

One Dr Thomas Agande in a statement on Sunday titled “ El Rufai Defiles Jesus Christ on Twitter said He went overboard when, on his Twitter page, yesterday January 27, 2013, said our Lord Jesus Christ had sex with Mary Magdalene.
We see this as a very insensitive, irresponsible, and a offensive thing to say about Christ, and an attack on the sensibilities of Christians globally.

El-Rufai betrayed his lack of respect for our Lord Jesus Christ and obvious hatred for Christians. How else can one explain his effrontery and buffoonery when he seemingly jokingly twitted that Christ had sex with Mary Magdalene.

Photo News: Henry Okah's Accomplice Gets Life In Jail Over Oct 1st Bombing In Abuja

Henry Okah's Accomplice Sentenced To Life In Jail For 2010 Independence Day Bombing

By SaharaReporters, New York
A man described as an accomplice to MEND's leader, Henry Okah in the 2010 Independence Day Bombing in Abuja has been found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja today.
Edmund Ebiware was arrested on October 2, 2010 at the Bolingo Hotel by the Nigerian secret police for failing to provide the government information about the planning and eventual execution of the bombing that killed 12 people on October 1st 2010 at the Federal capital city of Abuja.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole presiding at the trial gave a three hour ruling squarely blaming Ebiware for failure to disclose the planned acts of terrorism against the Nigerian state to the appropriate authorities.
The conviction and sentencing of Ebiware did not go down well with him as he became agitated and fought off security agents as they dragged him off to prison.
The accused leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Henry Okah, was also last week convicted for the bombing by a South African high court in Gauteng. He will be sentenced in February 2013.
