Container truck crushes man to death in Lagos

According to a report by Punch, a heavy loaded 40-foot container fell on a government meat van yesterday June 6th, crushing a passerby and wounding several others. The sad event took place at Ikeja Along Bus Stop on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Lagos.

Eyewitnesses said the truck had swerved off the road to avoid colliding with some policemen, who were chasing a motorcycle rider, before the incident occurred around 9am.

The victim, identified as Samuel Ogunnaike, was an employee of a popular phone dealer in Computer Village, Ikeja, and was on his way to the office when he met his death. Any hope that he could survive the accident was dashed after he was trapped for about four hours before his body was retrieved from the wreckage. (Punch)

11 Injured, 5 Arrested As Police, MASSOB Clash In Anambra

Not less than 11 members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, were yesterday at Nnobi and Awka-Etiti communities, Idemili South Local Government Areas of Anambra State, allegedly shot and injured by the police in a bid to disrupt their June 8 sit-at-home rally. Five others were arrested.


According to sources, the MASSOB members were in a rally at the said communities to create awareness on the need to observe June 8 sit-at-home in commemoration of six Igbo killed by the Police at Apo village, Abuja, EzuRiver, Amansea, Anambra state and others killed by Boko Haram.

According to Mazi Chris Mocha, MASSOB's Deputy Director of Information, "the police also took away MASSOB laptop system, N8,000 and arrested Jude Ochi, Nnamdi Ezeaka, Nelson Ugboh, Ifeanyi Eboh and others".

Also reacting to the situation, Prince Ohaegbulem Jude of the Lagos state branch of MASSOB regretted that Igbos have been marginalized and said, "this sit-at-home billed for June 8, 2013 is unstoppable despite the intimidations, arrests, shootings and harassments from the security operatives, Yoruba and the Hausa."

The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka confirmed the incident and hinted that two DPOs led the operation but denied the allegation that some members were shot by the police.

Fresh Arms Uncovered Inside Hezbollah "Bunker" in Kano

Security operatives in Kano have excavated another Hezbollah-linked cache of arms and ammunition in the same location as last week's find.



Military spokesman Captain Ikedichi Iweha said the new cache involves a bunker beneath the master bedroom. Three Lebanese nationals have been arrested.

The new discovery was made yesterday at the 3 Gaya Road, Bompai address where, last week, a large quantity of arms and ammunition was found in a warehouse, and four foreigners were arrested.

The owner of the warehouse, a Lebanese national, reportedly was being interrogated following the discovery. Today, however, it was understood that the property belongs to one Abdul Hassan Taher Fadlalla, a Lebanese national, but that he is currently out of the country.

In a statement made available to reporters, Iweha of the Third Brigade of the Nigerian Army said that further search of the bungalow led to the astonishing discovery of dangerous weapons buried under a wardrobe.

"After painstaking search of the whole premises, the search team uncovered an underground bunker in the master bed room where a large quantity of assorted weapons of different types and caliber and ammunition which were properly wrapped was recovered.

"On further search of the property, a cooler was recovered buried under the wardrobe which had in it, 80 indicators, 5 PPK pistols, 334 rds of 7.62mm special, 9 magazines, 4 pistol silencers, 18 36 hand grenades caps, 4 explosive fuses and 2 explosive devices."

He recalled that on 28 May 2013, a combined team of the DSS and 3 Brigade Nigerian Army conducted a thorough search of a house at No 3 Gaya Road off Bompai Road Kano.

Man discovers he did not father any of his three kids after 10 years of marriage

A 40-year-old businessman on Friday in Lagos sought the dissolution of his 10-year-old marriage, over paternity of the three children they supposedly had from the union.

Ambali Muraina told an Ikorodu Customary Court that he had confirmed that he was not the father of the children.

The plaintiff said that a DNA test confirmed that the children were not his.

He submitted that he went for the test after repeated comments by his wife, Mariam, that he was not the father of the children.

The plaintiff told the court that Mariam gave birth to all the three children while living with him.

He said: “She was always saying jokingly that I am not the father of the three children, anytime we had a misunderstanding.

“Please separate us, I don’t want to waste my money on another man’s children and I don’t want to live with them again.”

Thirty-year-old Mariam did not deny the allegation.

Just two days after he was confirmed as Chelsea’s new boss, Jose Mourinho has began to speak out about some of the conflicts he had during his tenure as Real Madrid coach.

US places $23m reward for Boko Haram leader, Shekau, 4 others

The US today Monday June 3rd posted up to $23 million in rewards to help track down five leaders of militant groups accused of spreading terror in west Africa.



The highest reward of $7 million is offered for the Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, who last week called on Islamists in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq to join the bloody fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.

The US State Department’s Rewards for Justice program also targeted Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), offering its first ever bounties for wanted militants in west Africa.


Up to $5 million was posted for Al-Qaeda veteran Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the one-eyed Islamist behind the devastating attack on an Algerian gas plant in January in which 37 foreigners, including three Americans, were killed.

A further $5 million was offered for top AQIM leader Yahya Abou Al-Hammam, reportedly involved in the 2010 murder of an elderly French hostage in Niger.

Malik Abou Abdelkarim, a senior fighter with AQIM, and Oumar Ould Hamaha, the spokesman for Mali’s Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), were also targeted by the rewards program, which will give up to $3 million each for information leading to their arrests.

One year remembrance today: Dana crash victims my there souls rest in peace

The Federal Government has instituted an annual aviation safety programme in memory of the victims of the June 3, 2012 Dana Air crash.

To mark the one year remembrance of the crash, which killed over 157 persons in Lagos, the Federal Government said it would unveil a cenotaph in their memory on Monday (today).


The aircraft, marked J9 992, took off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and crashed at Iju Ishaga on the outskirts of Lagos.

The Ministry of Aviation spokesperson, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said, “The safety week will be observed from June 3, 2013, and will be done every year in honour of those, who lost their lives in one of the most tragic accidents in the history of air transport in Nigeria.”



Dati said the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, would lead the church service for the ceremony, while the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah would be the chief host.

The ceremony, he said, would climax with the unveiling of the cenotaph.

He added that the safety week would start with the evaluation of the actions the ministry had taken to improve safety in the industry.

According to him, there has been the introduction of some safety critical equipment since the Dana Air crash.

Dati said the ministry had given safety and security priority in line with the Technical and Administrative Review Committee’s recommendations.

He said, “In the last one year, there has been improvement in communication, navigation and installation of modern surveillance equipment in all the airports in the country. There have been massive training and human capacity development of Air Traffic Controllers and other technical personnel of all the agencies in the aviation sector.”
