Killing of UNIBEN student: Hold me accountable – IGP promises justice

Uniben Student KillingFollowing the death of the UNIBEN student, Ibrahim Momodu on 27th May, 2013 in Benin City, Edo State capital, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, MD Abubakar, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Edo State to take urgent and appropriate steps to unravel the real circumstances that led to his death.
This was contained in a statement posted on the Facebook page of the Nigeria Police on Saturday.
While restating his Administration’s zero tolerance for any act that infringes on the fundamental
rights of all citizens, including the rights to life, IGP affirms that no stone will be left unturned in the quest for the truth, stressing that the Force will not condone any act of cover-up in the case.
“The IGP condoles the family, friends and colleagues of the late Ibrahim Momodu. He implores them to remain calm and patient as the Force has put all hands on deck towards ensuring a quick dispensation of justice,” it added.
Ibrahim Momodu, a final year student of the University of Benin was allegedly killed by officers of Ogida Police Station in Benin.
Students of the University of Benin had earlier in the week protested his death, calling for the arrest and persecution of the DPO of the station, Mrs Carol Afebgai, for the alleged murder.
Ibrahim was allegedly killed on the 27th of May and buried by the police the next day before the family could determine his whereabouts.
The elder sister of the deceased, Rebecca Egbe, who asked that justice be done, stated that her brother’s life was cut short by the bullet allegedly fired by the DPO of Ogida police station.
She added that her brother was later buried without the knowledge of the family.
But the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Eguavoen, speaking to journalists claimed that the late student was an armed robber. He said that a gun, bullets, two mobile phones and a bag was found with him.
Eguavoen however refused to explain whether the deceased attacked anyone with the said gun, to warrant the use of live bullets on him.
