Babcock University releases school fees for next session. Students protest

Well, they are not protesting in school or complaining to their school administration...they are protesting via the media. A few students from the school have sent me mails complaining about the exorbitant fees they are being made to pay to get an education.

The university just released the school fees for the next session and some of the students feel its outrageous.

1)Accounting- N1.5million
2) Nursing- N1million
3) Law- N2million
4) Medicine- N3million
5) Others- N860,000

The students are scared to protest in their school because they could get suspended. Babcock is a Christian University and claims to be a non-profit organization, so students don't understand why they have to pay such huge amounts to school there. But here's my thing; complaining about the school fees of a private university is like complaining about the cost of a first class plane ticket. You have other options; business class, premium economy class, economy class. If this is too much for you, move to a federal school, state school or less expensive private schools. Not that I support these fees, I think it's ridiculous. You pay N3million a session to become a doctor and when you eventually get a job, you make less than N200 thousand a month...doesn't make much sense to me...but that's the way the school wants to operate. You either take it or leave it! What do you guys think?

But meanwhile, is there anything the federal government can do for these students? Like, make their University bring down the fees?

Rape Victim Remanded, Suspect Granted Bail By Lagos Court

A Lagos-based couple, two weeks ago, got what they did not bargain for when an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court ordered the remand of their 7-year- old ward (name withheld) at the Child Correctional Center, Yaba, while the only suspect in police custody was granted bail.

The victim was allegedly raped several times by three men: Kassim Mohammed, 43, Oluwatobi Daramola and James Aniekan. The Magistrate, Mrs E. B Daudu of an Ikeja Magistrate court granted the application of the police prosecutor identified as Anthonia for the rape victim to be remanded in the Child Correctional Center because her guardians could not take proper care of her, which made her vulnerable to sexual assault.

The Magistrate however, released one of the suspects, Tobi, on bail. It took the kind intervention of the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Lagos High Court, Mr A.O. Isaacs for the Magistrate to temper justice with mercy by releasing the victim to her guardians after spending nearly the whole day at the correctional center.

According to the little girl, the police prosecutor, Anthonia, whom she described as the ‘fat woman’ accompanied her to the remand home and threatened that her people would not see her again. The little girl said that she was shown a cell with no windows at the Correctional Centre, and she was threatened that she would be locked there for five days.

Mohammed, Daramola and Aniekan were said to have allegedly defiled the little girl serially between July 2012 and January 2013. Daramola and Aniekan, were said to be about 21 and 19 years old respectively although, they claimed to be 17.The victim’s ordeal in the hands of the suspects, started when she was only 6 years old.

Two of the suspects, Daramola and Aniekan were arraigned at a magistrate’s court in Lagos for alleged defilement. The arraignment of Daramola, was held weeks before that of Aniekan. Tobi was arraigned on a one- count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with the hapless little girl.

One of the suspects, Kassim The charge sheet reads; “That you Daramola Oluwatobi ‘m’ between July 2012 and January 13, 2013 at Idowu Egba, Ikotun, Lagos in Lagos Magisterial District had sexual intercourse with one girl “f” aged 7 years and thereby committed an offense punishable under section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”

The victim who lives with her aunt and her husband at 2, Oladipo Close, off Lawani Ogunle Street, Greenland Estate, Isheri area of Lagos, narrated what she had suffered in the hands of the men.“My uncle (her aunt’s husband) and I were going to the shop. Tobi saw us. He then greeted my uncle. I also greeted him. The next day, my uncle told me to stay at home, eat and do my home work.

My uncle said he would be back at home very soon that he wanted to go and collect money from his shop.“When I went downstairs to buy biscuit, Tobi saw me. He greeted me and said, “Fine girl, how are you?’ I said ‘fine.” He asked if he could buy me anything and he bought gala and a bottle of coca-cola. He then asked me to show him our house, which I did and later when I was in bed and about to sleep, Tobi came into our house. He played football with me and left.“The next day, Tobi, James and one small boy came. They put their fingers inside my bum-bum (that is they thrust their fingers into her private part).

The next day, Tobi and James came again without the small boy. They now put their wee-wee(penis) inside my bum-bum(private part).
Another day again Tobi came with Kassim, Kassim was holding a knife and a pack of Five-Alive and gala.”Tobi left but Kassim used his wee-wee on me. He said that if I shout he would kill me with the knife. When Kassim had finished, he said I should show him my bathroom. I showed him and he bathed. After bathing, he said I should bring a glass cup. He shared the five-alive. He gave me four rolls of gala while he took two. He told me to throw the empty pack of five-alive into the dustbin. Kassim left after he had made sure that I discarded the empty pack of the juice into the dustbin.”

The victim who has gotten used to being violated sexually every day was relieved temporarily as she escaped being abused the next day by the suspects, as she went on holiday.  “The next day, I did not see Kassim because I went to my aunt’s sister’s place at Igando on holiday.”It was however a temporary relief for her because the sexual assault continued when she came back from the holiday.”

When I came back from aunt’s sister’s place. I was sent on errand by my aunt. On my way, I met Kassim who asked after my uncle and aunt. I told him they were around. Kassim now said that I should enter his house. The next day I wanted to go and buy biscuit for Chibuike my little brother (the aunt’s son), Tobi saw me and asked that I should follow him to his house. He threatened that if I refused, he would make sure I got lost and so would not see my parents again.“I followed him out of fear while carrying my two-year old cousin along. Tobi defiled me once again using his male sex organ. When he finished, he told me to go and bathe in his bathroom, but I left with my brother to buy the biscuit. My aunt asked me why I came back late. I told her that there were many people that wanted to buy things from the Mallam (the man selling provisions). I did not report all these things to my aunt and her husband because Kassim threatened to deal with me if I mentioned his name.”

MD Abubakar, Police IG Narrating her own side of the story, the victim’s aunt simply called, Ngozi, said when the ordeal of her little niece started, she was in Abuja where she went to give birth. She said she was in Abuja between June and August last year, and even had to return to Abuja for medical attention because she developed complications after she had given birth through Cesarian operation. While she was away, she said the victim was left in the care of her husband and a cousin.

She said it was in January this year, while she was going through the little girl’s clothes that she discovered that two of the little girl’s under wears had blood stains, then she suspected that something was amiss. She then persuaded her neice until she told her about James who worked in a barber’s shop nearby. She said the little girl also told her that James defiled her and threatened to deal with her if she revealed what he had done to her.She said, “Immediately, I called my pastor and told him what happened. He called one of the members of our church who is a policewoman.

The woman said I had to come down to Ikotun Police Station to officially report.” After the police had interviewed the girl, they got James arrested. The father of James was trying to defend his son that he could not have defiled the girl since he, the father, is a pastor. However, James was detained and arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail.

According to Ngozi, James confessed that he did it. He, according to her, even wrote a confessional statement at the police station. But James’s father allegedly maintained that he made the statement under duress.

Unfortunately, while this was going on, her guardians did not know that she had been raped several times by more than one person. ”It was two weeks later that we discovered that there were others. I heard my two-year old son ordering the girl to lie down in bed. I wondered how a two-year old boy could talk like that. So, I asked her where the boy learnt that.“She was just staring at me. I insisted that she answers me. It was then she told me it was one Tobi that said that to her and that the little boy was present when he did that. I started shouting and asked if the boy was watching as Tobi defiled her. She said yes that Tobi ordered him to look at the dressing mirror in his room, she told me about Tobi and Kassim.”

However, Ngozi said the police were reluctant to arrest the suspects stating that Tobi’s parents went as far as alleging that she wanted to extort money from them while Kassim’s wife claimed that her husband was not in Lagos.

According to Ngozi, the police were no longer working in our interest even when Tobi was arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court presided over by Mrs. E. B Daudu. She said what really galled her and her husband was when the police prosecutor identified as Anthonia who was supposed to be working in her interest, made an application for the rape victim to be remanded in the Child Correctional Center at Yaba.

The prosecutor claimed that the application was necessary because the guardians could not take proper care of her. This, she said was what made her vulnerable to sexual assault. To the chagrin of the plaintiffs, Mrs. Daodu granted the application while she released Tobi on bail.

Meanwhile, the family of the victim who no longer has any trust in the ability of the police to prosecute the three suspects is making efforts to get the Lagos State Government to take over the case from the police.

Muslim Women Cry Out Over MEND’s Threat

Muslim women have cried out to Nigeria’s Federal Government to put security measures in place to protect the lives of Muslims, their properties and mosques. A Muslim women’s group cried on Thursday, following a threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, to launch violent attacks against them from next month.

The Criterion, an association of Muslim women in business and different professions, said in a statement that the government must do all it can to protect Muslims, Muslim clerics and various Islamic institutions in Nigeria.

“In an e-mail dated 14 April, 2013, the militant group threatened to commence ‘the bombings of Mosques, hajj camps, Islamic institutions and Islamic clerics and large congregation of Islamic events ‘in defence of Christianity’.

“The Criterion wonders whether MEND is acting alone in its proposed terror campaign or it is acting the script of other groups and individuals who had expressed similar anti-Islam views in the past,” said Dr. Shareefah Labo-Popoola, the Criterion National President.

The group argued that most of the attacks by the dreaded Boko Haram Islamic sect were targeted at Muslims and Muslim institutions, and claimed the lives of many Muslims.

The Criterion condemned Boko Haram killings, saying that they are ‘un-Islamic.

“The violent group has distorted core Islamic concepts and are only disguising as Muslims to drum up support for their misguided conducts,” the statement read.

“Islam forbids a Muslim to take another person’s life irrespective of creed or race. Islam is a religion of peace and preaches sanctity of all human lives irrespective of their religious affiliations.

“It is also written in the last message delivered by Prophet Muhammed (SAW) that the life of a Muslim is sacred to another Muslim, however, Boko Haram has repeatedly ignored these teachings by killing innocent citizens mostly Muslims in the northern part of the country,”  The Criterion said.

The group said it rejects any form of violence from either Boko Haram or MEND.

“Muslims just like Christians have equal rights to practice their religion as entrenched in the constitution. No group should be allowed under any disguise to perpetrate evil.

“We call on the Federal Government to employ all lawful means to stop the evil of the two groups in view of the fact that in any war or violent situation, women and children suffer most,” the group urged.

No fewer than six persons died on Sunday in a fatal accident which occurred along the Enugu Onitsha Expressway, in Enugu State.

An eye witness told DailyPost that the accident involved a Mercedes trailer with registration number XC 288 ASB and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XA 725 AGW.

He said the trailer, while trying to avoid a pothole on the only functioning lane in the expressway, collided with the bus killing six persons instantly and leaving four others critically injured.

The Enugu state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident disclosed that “six persons have been confirmed dead, while four others were seriously injured, thus bringing the total number of casualties to ten in a ghastly motor accident that occurred on 14/4/13 along Enugu Onitsha expressway, near former toll gate at 9th Mile corner near Enugu”.

He added that the injured persons have been removed and taken to a nearby hospital for medical assistance.

The PPRO expressed worry over the increasing rate of accident on Nigerian roads, urging motorists to “observe and obey all traffic laws and regulation in order to stay alive”.

EXPOSED? Actor Pete Edochie In A Paternity Scandal Latest

He’s popularly known as Ephy Saint in Nairobi, Kenya where he reigns supreme as a model and thespian of note.

This actor cum model is yet to unravel the mystery surrounding his paternity as he claims to be a son to the veteran actor, Pete Edochie popularly known as Okonkwo by movie buffs.

photo
When we, first came out with a bit of the story, so many things happened, Chief Edochie was contacted by Kenyan journalists and he denied, for the fifteenth time, having anything to do with an offspring in Kenya. A call from our office to his line 080920**16* was not picked and even our sms to him was not attended to. In this interview with Alonge Michael of Nigeriafilms.com, this 23 year-old entertainer said he was really bitter that all his effort to meet his father is futile. Please read this interestingly revealing interview.
Tell me a bit about yourself?
I’m 24 years old, raised by an awesome single mother, who I would gladly give an organ to. I am working so hard to live my dream which is to be the best in the world as an actor / model and a movie maker... I love life and have very fun-loving people around me. I always grow to be me and no one else.
How and where did you grow up?
All over, with my mum and my grand folks, in Kenya.
With your mum; how about your father?
Hmmm, I don’t know, I never met him.
Can you tell us why?
I can't …He is a magician ...had me and disappeared, so I can't tell much about him.
How did you now turn up to be who you are?
I was brought up by two strong-willed women, my mum and my grandmother, discipline being the core of my upbringing. So I turned out alright I guess.
As a child, what did you think of becoming?
A model, reason being that, I have always loved glamour.
How did you attain this status in the modeling world?
Remaining consistent in my craft and patience also came in handy.
What's your greatest achievement?
Coming to being.
Do you have any regret?
No ... I believe everything happens for a reason.
What influence does your mum have on you?
She made me love me for who I am and taught me to be real with myself and the people around me. I’m the person I am because of her.
What's that thing about you that you would want to change?
My financial status... I want to make more money ...don't get me wrong, not that I don’t have money now but I want to have enough money because I have a mother and younger sister to take care of.
Aside Kenya, where would you love to live?
My father’s land ... Nigeria
Nigeria?
Yes, Nigeria! I learnt he’s a prominent and well known and respected actor in Nigeria from the South Eastern part of the country, as I am made to believe by my mum. That’s the little I know about him.
Are you sure?
My mum said so, in fact, he’s still very much an active participant in the industry.
Taking a closer look at yourself, who do you think your dad is?
Well, my mum said and I want to believe her that multiple award-winning actor, Pete Edochie is my biological father.
How sure are you?
I can't prove it; I only got wind of it last year.
Can you give us reasons why you can’t prove it?
Distance and lack of information from both of them, my mum and him, that is, my biological father, Pete Edochie.
But does your mum realise that you need to know who your true father is?
She does, she kept it away from me until last year when she told me about it. I was shocked.
Have you made effort to reach Pete Edoche after that revelation?
Yes I have, like any other man who might not be in the know about an existing biological child of his; he denied. Saying he has never been to Kenya in his entire life
Through what means did you reach out to him?
My mum sent someone to him and the person return with his message that he said he never had any fling with anybody in Kenya because he has never been there in his entire life.
What was your reaction when he said that?
It’s either he’s lying or he has a twin brother.
This fact you have is not enough to call him your father….
There are talks here and there that he used to live in Nairobi in Kenya in a small town called Buru Buru.
What year?
1987-1988
Has it ever occurred to you that your mum might not be factual about this?
I believe my mother. She has always been there for me, I don’t see a reason why she would lie or hide any information about my father or paternity. This is not a matter to be joked with.
So she told you that Pete Edochie, Nigerian bearded actor is your father?
Yes she did.
The burden now rests on your shoulders to press further on the paternity issue, since you know your mum is not making a mistake then you should stand as a man to unravel the mystery surrounding your birth.
May be this is how God wants it. In Kenya, I am a big name and I have followership but in God I trust. Thanks for your advice anyway.
What attempt have you made to come to Nigeria and solve this riddle once and for all?
If a man wants nothing to do with me and I believe him to be my father, I also don't want much to do with him.
Doesn’t your mother have a picture or something she can put down as evidence?
She was having a picture of the two of them together, according to her, she gave it to a friend to help trace him and that friend said he has misplaced the picture. Now you can see the critical situation I have been placed.
From the look of things, I guess only DNA can settle this paternity issue?
If he truly hasn't been to Kenya as he claimed and I take him through all that, he will hate me the more, so DNA test seems like a long thing right now. I want to believe that everything happens for a reason. I am made to succeed in life. I am not looking for money or anything from Pete, just his acceptance. But of what use is the success for a man to deny the paternity of his child. It’s cruelty and all of us shall meet to account for our various deeds on earth.
Presently where do you live?
I live in Nairobi, Kenya
If there was just one wish you have, what would it be?
I want a complete family.
What surname do you bear?
Muriithi
How? That’s not a Nigerian name as you claim to have a Nigerian father…
Some other man took responsibility of bringing me up but he also left soon after my sister was born, but his mother brought me up that's why I kept the name. He’s a Kenyan
Did this other guy too divorce your mum or just left like your dad?
Left, my mum was never married to any of them
Modeling or acting; which one pays your bills the most?
They both have taken and given from each other, but modeling pays much better in Kenya.
Lastly, what’s that secret desire?
I would love to be buried in Nigeria, the land of my father.
Thanks for your time?
You are welcome

Why I Exposed My Skin, “I Was Paid Very Handsomely For The Job" - Singer, Adokiye

Until early this year when she posed semi-nude for a New York based magazine, Adokiye Kyrian Yvonne a.k.a Adokiye is relatively unknown in the nation’s music scene.

But immediately after that controversial posture, the sexy singer has become one of the hottest rising  female singers in the country. In this recent interview, she speaks on the raunchy photo spread among other issues.

Early this year, you posed semi-nude in a New York based magazine. What was the attraction?
It actually got leaked. I did some modeling jobs while I was in New York and at that point in time,  some  pictures leaked while the process was still going on. Yes, I posed for some shots, but I never really posed nude. I didn’t expose my private part as a woman.  That I exposed my skin doesn’t mean I posed  nude. I am an architect by training  and creativity is part of my daily routine. So, I didn’t pose  nude because I didn’t expose my private part.

photo

We learnt, you were paid handsomely for the job?
Officially, I was paid  the sum of $200,000 and a G Wagon Mercedes Benz car for the photo spread in the magazine.

Do you ever regret posing nude?
I have never for once regretted anything I have done in the past. But at the end of the day, I just want people to believe in me that I have got a lot to offer to my fans.

photo

Were your parents pleased when they saw your nude pictures?
My parents are highly understanding people. They know the kind of daughter they have and they also  know that whatever  I’m doing today doesn’t affect me both psychologically and physically. So, they always support  me in anything I’m doing.

What were you doing  in  New York?
New York is like a second home to me. I travel to New York once in a while.

There was this rumour that you were dating W4. Is it true?
No, we were never in any relationship. But we were just friends and he was a colleague too.

Genevieve Nnaji's Daughter Pictured In Bikini

If there's any award for the most secretive celebrity in Nigeria, it will go to no one but your darling A-list actress, Genevieve Nnaji who has done everything possible to shield the privacy of her only daughter and that of her dad.

photo

Though, there had been so many controversies behind the man who fathered Genevieve's daughter, and whilst some school of thoughts are of the opinion that, Genevieve herself cannot boast of who the father is due to the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy because she was so young (she was impregnated at 15), your soar away magazine, National Enquirer which was the first ever tabloid to publish the intimate family pictures of the Nnajis including Genevieve's baby pictures and that of her daughter again discovered a certain man nick-named Acura who claimed he actually impregnated Genevieve and didn’t take the responsibility because of religious factor.
Acura hails from a liberal Christian background while the Nnajis are staunch Catholic who detest giving birth outside wedlock. Acura spoke exclusively to us then but trust Genevieve, all efforts to get her to talk have been abortive. Now, the exclusive pictures you're savouring is that of Chimebuka a.k.a Lily - Genevieve's 18 year old daughter who lives abroad.
The paragon of beauty was recently at the beach where she surrendered her privacy for paparazzi's lenses to click away. She also took some photographs of herself inside a car and another one in a dinner with friends. We even gathered that, she's considering a career in the area of modeling after high school. She's in her final year we scooped.

3 Newly Discovered Planets Could Host Life

(CNN) -- In the midst of chaos here on Earth, scientists are finding hope for life on other planets.

Scientists announced Thursday the discovery of three planets that are some of the best candidates so far for habitable worlds outside our own solar system -- and they're very far away.

NASA's Kepler satellite, which is keeping an eye on more than 150,000 stars in hopes of identifying Earth-like planets, found the trio.

Two of the planets -- Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f -- are described in a study released Thursday in the journal, Science. They are part of a five-planet system in which the candidates for life are the farthest from the host star.

The host star -- the equivalent of Earth's sun -- takes the name Kepler-62, where the individual planets are designated by letters thereafter.

The third planet that's potentially habitable, but not included in the Science study, is called Kepler-69c. Liquid water could theoretically exist on the surfaces of any of them, researchers said.

"With all of these discoveries we're finding, Earth is looking less and less like a special place and more like there's Earth-like things everywhere," said Tom Barclay, Kepler scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute in Sonoma, California.

You won't be swimming on the planets anytime soon, though. The Kepler-62 star is 1,200 light years away; Kepler-69 is 2,700 light years away. A light year, the distance that light travels in a vacuum in one year, is nearly 6 trillion miles.

What are these planets like?

The smaller a planet is, the more likely it's rocky and the less likely it's made of gas, said William Borucki, Kepler science principal investigator at NASA Ames Research Center.

Kepler-62f is thought to be 40% larger than Earth and could be rocky, he said. It goes around its star once every 267.3 days (Earth days, that is).

Kepler-62e appears to be 60% larger than our planet and a little closer to its host star; this one could be a "water world" of mostly deep oceans, he said. It circles its star in 122.4 days.

"All these planets that we're finding are quite different than planets in our own solar system," Borucki said.

Kepler-69c appears to orbit a star similar to Earth's sun, Barclay said. As it's estimated to be about 70% larger than Earth, it may also be a water world, with oceans thousands of kilometers deep.

It's not likely to have a rocky surface, Barclay said. According to what little we know about it, Kepler-69 is probably significantly warmer than Earth.

"Probably, if there is life, it would be very unlike what we see on our own world," Barclay said.

Other worlds that may have life

Borucki said the planets are "by far" better candidates for life than any others we know about, but a handful of others also have been identified as potentially capable of hosting life.

You may recall planet Kepler-22b, which was announced in December 2011 and also was hailed as a potential candidate for hosting life. That planet had a radius 2.4 times that of Earth and is 600 light years away.

Kepler-22b was thought to have a temperature similar to that of Earth, according to modeling by Borucki and colleagues. The planet's host star is dimmer and cooler than our sun, but the planet is also 15% closer than we are to the sun.

There is also a planet called Gliese-581g, discovered in September 2010, which is thought to be even more like Earth than Kepler-22b in terms of its suitability for plants and animals. It's only 20 light years from Earth -- a lot closer than the newly discovered planets, though there has been some controversy about its existence.

In its solar system there is another planet, Gliese-581d, that is also of interest in the search for life, according to the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. The group's catalog lists a few other candidates.

However, just like the other planets, we haven't seen or tested the atmospheres of any of these planets, so whether they're habitable remains theoretical.

Often, when you find an example of a kind of planet, you start seeing a lot of them, said Sara Seager, professor of planetary science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She used to be part of the Kepler team but is now independent.

"Planets in the habitable zones of stars must be everywhere," she said.

Seager called the discovery of the three planets "a huge milestone," but her excitement is tempered because potentially habitable planets have been announced in the past and there's currently no way to get more details, given how far away they are.

"We'll possibly never know if these particular ones do have water oceans or signs of life," she said.

Identifying planets, not atmospheres

The goal of the Kepler mission wasn't to find alien lifeforms, however. The satellite is supposed to investigate Earth-sized planets around stars that resemble our sun.

The Kepler telescope, launched in 2009, allows scientists to measure changes in brightness of individual stars over time; these dimming events signal that a planet is nearby. Scientists undertake sophisticated calculations to verify that such signals are planets and not passing rocks.

The satellite finds planets that are very far away because it's surveying so many stars. Imagine, said Seager, that you are in Times Square and you want to see 150,000 people at once. You wouldn't be able to do it in such a way that you could see any details of the people; you'd have to get far enough away that that many people would fit into your field of view.

This isn't the only planet-finding technique. The Gliese-581 system was found with the Keck I Telescope in Hawaii, using what is called the radial velocity method. The telescope's spectrometer allows scientists to look for wobbles in the motion of a star, which happens in response to the gravity of nearby planets.

It would take a different kind of mission to investigate the atmosphere of one of these distance planets to find out answers to the most-pressing questions. Is there carbon dioxide and water? Is there oxygen?

"Future NASA missions are going to focus on more nearby stars that we can look at in much more detail," Barclay said.
