Expelled 400 Level Students Sues Redeemers

A four hundred level student of Political Science of Redeemers University of all Nations, John Gift Momoh alleged to have been expelled by the school on the ground of taking hard drugs has dragged the institution before an Ogun State High Court in Ota, southwest Nigeria.

In an affidavit sworn to by Momoh and filed before the court by a Lagos lawyer, Barrister Adejumo Omobolaji, the deponent alleged that he was summarily expelled from the university without justification.

Momoh averred further that in a letter of expulsion dated 29 January, 2013 addressed to him and given to his father, the reason for his expulsion was addiction to morphine and cannabis but he averred that he has never taken psychotropic substance in his life and as such he could not be a drug addict.

The applicant stated further that the school conducted urine test on him and other students sometime in November 2012. He said.

The result of the tests were not shown to them and the school’s health centre is not an accredited forensic

FG to scrap UTME (JAMB Exam), NECO, NAPEP, others

Indications emerged last night that the Federal Government may have resolved to scrap some of its agencies in line with the recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye-led Presidential Committee on the Rationalization and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies following the completion of study of its White Paper Committee report. Among those scrapped are Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UMTE), National Examination Council (NECO), Public Complaints Commission, National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and the Fiscal Mobilization and Allocation Commission among others.

The Oronsaye committee had recommended the abolition of 38 agencies, the merger of 52 and the reversion of 14 to departments in the ministries from which they were carved out, a move the committee argued would save the government more than N862 billion between 2012 and 2015 should its proposal be adopted. A reliable government source confirmed that President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo and selected senior aides of the president met twice and eventually took decisions, which included the scrapping of some agencies and merging of others.

Another source revealed that the with the scrapping of the UTME, individual universities in the country would conduct their own admission examinations and admit students while the Joint Matriculation and Examination Board will set and ensure compliance to standards as it acts as the clearing house. The source said JAMB would be modeled along the line of Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS), the central organization through which applications are processed for entry to higher education in the United Kingdom.

According to the source, “individual university will do their own examination and admission. If you want to apply to a university, you do so but in order not to have a situation where one person gets multiple admission, JAMB acts as a clearing house to free up spaces. All the universities are free now to admit students.” Even though details were still being worked out, it was learnt that government’s decision, was informed by the need to promote merit in admission into the nation’s universities because “the idea is to ensure that the best students go to the best universities.”

The source further disclosed that the president had also approved that the West African Examination Council (WAEC) is now expected to take over the functions and vast infrastructure of NECO, which now ceases to exist. The sources confirmed that WAEC would now conduct two external examinations in a year, January and November. The Public Complaints Commission is to be merged with the Human Rights Commission, just as NAPEP would also be scrapped and replaced National Agency for Job Creation and Empowerment.

The Oronsaye-led Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation made far-reaching recommendations, which, it explained, were aimed at helping the government to effect a drastic reduction in the size of its bloated bureaucracy, eliminating duplication of functions and bringing down the cost of governance. The committee submitted its report to the president in April last year.

I Was Raped 5 Times By My Dad's Friend - 10yrs Old Girl

A 10-year old girl (name withheld) who lives at Agbado Ijaiye area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria, has alleged that her father’s best friend, Sunday Nwankwo, raped her five times in the last 2 years.

Nwankwo was arraigned at the Magistrate’s Court 6, Ikeja and sent to Kirikiri Prison as he could not perfect the stringent bail conditions granted to him by the magistrate.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge of defiling a minor and having carnal knowledge of her forcefully.

He was granted bail on the condition that he provides three sureties in kike sum of N100,000 each, three years evidence of tax payment to the government and each of the surety must possess landed property worth N5 million.

The accused was alleged to have been having sex with the little girl since she was eight years old.

Test conducted on the girl at the Orile Agege General Hospital showed that she was no longer a virgin.

The alleged illicit act was exposed when the three-year old brother of the victim told their mother that somebody used to lay his sister down when nobody was around.

Their mother became curious and questioned the girl, who later revealed that Nwankwo had been having sex with her, saying that he had slept with her five times.

According to the girl’s mother, "When I first asked her, she denied it but when I threatened to pour pepper on her, she opened up and said it was her father’s friend that slept with her.

She said by the time I gave birth to my second son, that was the third time her father’s friend had slept with her.

I gave birth to my second son two years ago, when she was eight years old."

She explained that because the church the family attended was far, she usually asked her daughter and the rest to go to the Four Square Church in Nwankwo’s compound, which gave the man the opportunity to carry out the alleged act.

She said: "My husband has been feeding Nwankwo for years. People even thought my husband was his younger brother because of their closeness."

The 10-year old girl, who is in Junior Secondary School 1, had explained to her mother and the Esther Child Rights Foundation, which pursued the matter, that Nwankwo would lay her down on a plank after putting a foam on top of it and then have carnal knowledge of her.

She alleged that the man usually brought out a knife and threatened to kill her if she reported the matter to anybody.

The little girl added that because he lays her on a plank during the act, that was why she normally complains of waist pain.

The matter was reported at the AIT Police Station which led to the suspect’s arrest.

It was gathered that the police tried to cover up the matter even when the test conducted on the girl proved that she was no longer a virgin.

The test result was tendered to the police but they were not willing to prosecute the suspect.

The culprit was released and re-arrested after the Esther Child Rights Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, intervened and demanded for justice.

This led the police to arraign the suspect at the Magistrate’s Court 6, Ikeja.

According to the Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs Esther Ogwu, she got to know about the matter when the mother of the raped girl contacted her, saying that the police tried to cover up the matter but that due to her persistence, the alleged culprit was charged to court.

Ogwu said she interviewed the raped victim and that she narrated all that happened to her and how she was defiled by her father’s best friend several times.

The case has been adjourned till 24 May, 2013 for hearing.

Woman Burns 14-Year-Old Maid’s Buttocks For Being ‘Promiscuous

A 14-year-old house maid, Otobong Edet John, had her buttocks seared with hot electric iron by her mistress, simply identified as Ekaette, on the suspicion that she was promiscuous.

Narrating her ordeal, Otobong said she was receiving a call on her phone when the madam operating a canteen asked her who was on the phone and she said it was one of her friends. “But madam did not believe me and started beating me. So I ran and stayed somewhere with my friend”, she stated.

According to her, she remained in that place until about 10p.m. when she went to sleep in a church close to their shop and the next morning “when I was about coming to the shop, a neighbour saw me discussing with a customer who was asking me where I was coming from so early in the morning and went to tell my aunty that I spent the night with the man”. The madam, she said, went to the police station at nearby Atimbo Road, Calabar and reported to them that the man abducted her housemaid.

But after the police interrogated the man, they let him go and this infuriated Ekaette following which she allegedly dragged Otobong to the shop, plugged the electric iron and when it was red hot, she used the scorched parts to sear the maid’s body including her buttocks and right arm. Not done yet, she allegedly put a basin of banana on the girl’s head, asking her to go to town and sell even as her arm and buttocks were bleeding. “It was a customer who wanted to buy banana that saw that my arm was bleeding and asked me what happened and, when I showed him my buttocks, he shouted and took me to the police”, she said. The mistress, while being interrogated by the police at Akim Police Division for causing bodily harm to a minor, justified her action by saying that Otobong was a rude and wayward girl. “When she told me it was Mary that called her, I called back that number and it was a male voice that answered and she then changed the story that she did not know what the man wanted after she had discussed with the man for over two minutes”,Ekaette said.

She said there were instances when the girl had gone from home to stay with men even as she had repeatedly cautioned her to change her ways. “That girl you are seeing is a very wayward girl and, if I tell you her story, you would marvel”, she said.

The Public Relations Officer for the Cross River State Police Command, DSP John Umoh, said the action of Ekaette was unacceptable as it amounted to child abuse and “after investigations she would be taken to court”.
